Major Crimes in Ireland

I am including Sexual offences, Homicide (Murder), Negligent Acts, Robbery/Extortion, Weapons/Explosives Offences, Fraud, and Kidnapping and Organised Crime/Offences against the Government as major crimes in this blog post. For any other crimes, see my blog post about minor crimes in Ireland.  If I missed any, or if you have any questions,  please comment below.

Here is a table of the major crimes in Ireland during 2016:

I got these stats from the CSO (Central Statistics Office) in Ireland (see their website at: http://www.cso.ie )

If you look at the table, you'll notice that overall, the most common crime was Organised Crime/Offences against the Government. However, this was not the most common crime in the Northern or Western regions of Ireland, with an especially large amount of incidents in the Eastern area.
Next was Dangerous or Negligent acts. This was the leading crime in the Northern and Western regions. It was no. 2 in the South, but in the East, it was only 3rd.
Third overall was Fraud/Deception Offences. It was the Second highest in the East, but the much lower numbers in the South, North and West brought it down.
The lowest two were Kidnapping and Related Offences, and Homicide (which is Murder).
For all areas, the number of Kidnappings etc. were higher than the number of Homicide incidents, but not by much.

It focuses on 10 of the worst people who have committed crimes in America.
At the time of writing (2nd Feb 2017), the list is:

1: Jason Derek Brown                   https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/jason-derek-brown

*The links go to the FBI most wanted page of each person*

Three of the ten mentioned there committed their crimes in Texas, two were in Arizona, One was in Maryland/North Carolina, one in Pensylvania, one was in Wisconsin, One in Illinois, and one in California.

I was most intrigued by William Bradford Bishop jr. He failed to get a promotion at work, so he drove to a Home Depot, picked up a pitchfork, petrol, and a hammer, went home and beat his wife, mother and children to death. He then put their bodies in his car and drove over 200 miles north from Maryland to North Carolina, put their bodies in a pit, and burned them.

Here is a video on 5 of the others on the FBI most wanted. It shows the background to what they did, what they did, and where they are thought to be now

Minor Crimes in Ireland

According to the C.S.O. (Central Statistics Office), by far the most common minor crime in Ireland is theft. The breakdown of where theft is most common is quite interesting.

*This Post does not talk about:*
Sexual offences, Homicide, Negligent Acts, Robbery/Extortion, Weapons/Explosives Offences, Fraud, or Kidnapping.
*I have determined these to be major (and therefore more exciting) crimes*

In the west of Ireland, Theft is the most common crime, with over 3,00 instances in 2016, followed by public order and social misconduct with around 2,800 instances in 2016. the least common crime was Controlled Drug Offences, with around 800 instances in 2016.

In the south of Ireland, theft was again the most common crime, with around 6,000 instances in 2016, followed by Public order and social misconduct, with 2,400 instances in 2016. Controlled Drug Offences was the least common, with around 600 instances.

In the North, theft had the highest recorded incidents in 2016 with 3,000, and Public order and social code offences was next, with around 2,500 incidents. Last was controlled drug offences again, with around 700 offences in 2016

In Dublin, theft was of course number one, at around 24,500 recorded offences. The next one along was not public disorder and social misconduct (that was a close third), but Damage to Property and the Environment, which was at 6,500 instances in 2016. Attempts/threat to cause Murder/Assault/Harrasment etc was last, with 3,800 recorded instances.

What is a crime?

The Miriam Webster online dictionary defines crime as:
  1. 1 :  an illegal act for which someone can be punished by the government; especially :  a gross violation of law
  2. 2 :  a grave offense especially against morality
  3. 3 :  criminal activity <efforts to fight crime>
  4. 4 :  something reprehensible, foolish, or disgraceful <It's a crime to waste good food.>

In my blog, I will be focusing on the first definition of crime.

How do you commit a crime?

You commit a crime by having the intent to do something that is against the law, while in a normal state of mind. However, if someone witnesses you commit a crime, and knowingly does not make any action to prevent the crime then, they are accomplices to you and have also committed the crime.

To put it simply, you don't have to pull the trigger to shoot the person.

Hello Internet (and Mr. Lydon), my name is Jacob Stanley and this is my blog. This blog will be all about where crimes happen the most, what crimes are committed more and where they are committed, where the people who commit the crimes are from, and a study of the FBI 10 most wanted.
